Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with risk factors such as sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and stress contributing to their prevalence (WHO, 2024). Regular physical activity is widely recognized as a cost-effective intervention for reducing CVD risk, improving heart health, and enhancing overall well-being (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).

In Nigeria, cardiovascular disease cases are rising due to urbanization, poor dietary habits, and physical inactivity. Kwara State has implemented several health promotion programs to encourage physical activity, but their effectiveness remains uncertain (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). This study evaluates the impact of physical activity promotion programs on cardiovascular health in Kwara State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the known benefits of physical activity, many individuals in Kwara State lead sedentary lifestyles, increasing their risk of cardiovascular diseases. Awareness programs exist, but participation rates and long-term adherence remain low (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study examines the effectiveness of physical activity promotion initiatives in improving cardiovascular health outcomes in Kwara State, focusing on awareness, participation, and lifestyle changes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness about the benefits of physical activity for cardiovascular health.
  2. To evaluate the impact of physical activity promotion on CVD risk reduction.
  3. To identify challenges affecting participation in physical activity programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness about the benefits of physical activity in Kwara State?
  2. How effective are physical activity promotion programs in reducing CVD risk?
  3. What are the barriers to participation in physical activity programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Physical activity promotion has no significant impact on CVD awareness.
  2. There is no significant relationship between physical activity promotion and cardiovascular health improvement.
  3. Barriers to physical activity participation do not significantly affect program effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adults in Kwara State, assessing their engagement in physical activity and the impact on cardiovascular health. Limitations include differences in personal motivation and access to exercise facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): A group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels.
  • Physical Activity Promotion: Initiatives aimed at encouraging regular exercise for health benefits.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: A way of living that involves minimal physical activity, increasing health risks.
